PMEL FIELD PHOTOS
These are photos taken in the field provided by Metrologists of their daily efforts to maintain standards and customer
service around the globe.
1.
Shemya’s
1st
PMEL
was
established
on
the
2x4
square-mile
island
in
Alaska’s
Western
Aleutians
in
1975.
Ten
individuals,
along
with
1,090
others
from
various
career
fields,
were
the
sole
occupants
of
Shemya,
AK
…along
with
hundreds
of
native
Blue
Fox.
This
was
an
isolated
1-year
tour
of
duty.
The
Shemya
Metrology
crew
initially
operated
using
a
Transportable
Field
Calibration
Unit
(TFCU)…a
lab
contained
in
suitcases…out
of
what
was
a
remaining
WWII
shack
along
the
main
road
from
the
barracks
to
the
flight
line.
